Metcar Valves
Carbon graphite ball valve seats are utilized by many manufacturers in the most severe chemical environments, due to their high degree of chemical compatibility. Metcar’s carbon graphite ball valve seats are designed to handle hot liquids or gases ranging from approximately 350°F to over 800°F in oxidizing environments. They are also used for fire-safe ball valves in the petroleum industry, and must operate freely after a simulated fire test where the valve is heated to 1400-1800°F for at least thirty minutes. The ball valve seats are produced by shrink-fitting a carbon graphite ring into a metal retaining ring. After shrink-fitting, the carbon graphite is pre-stressed in compression and exhibits the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the metal retaining ring. The concave face of the carbon graphite ring is then polished to make a pressure-tight fit with the ball, and the back face of the carbon graphite is lapped flat to make a pressure-tight fit with the valve housing. Metcar Piston Rings
Our self-lubricating, carbon graphite piston rings and guide rings are used when there is a need for compressed gases that do not contain oil or grease. In a reciprocating compressor, oil-free gases such as air, steam, refrigerants, hydrogen, hydrocarbons, chlorine, nitrogen and oxygen can be compressed to pressures of over 800 psi. Segmented Metcar carbon graphite rings with overlapped joints are placed in a radial groove in the reciprocating piston with little clearance between the width of the groove and the width of the piston ring. A metal leaf spring expander ring in the ID of the segmented piston ring is used to exert outward force to hold the piston ring OD against the cylinder bore. Wear life up to 10,000 hours is possible when the compressor and piston rings are correctly designed. Carbon graphite piston rings are usually used in conjunction with carbon graphite guide rings or carrier rings. The function of the piston rings is to seal the high-pressure gas, and the function of the guide rings is to hold the piston centered with respect of the cylinder bore. Therefore, the guide ring must be in close contact with the piston and the housing bore. Guide rings can be either solid rings or segmented rings with butt joints.

Metcar Mechanical Seal
Mechanical seal rings are used to seal the clearance between the rotating shaft and the stationary housing in equipment such as pumps and mixers so that liquid cannot leak out through this clearance. These sealing mechanisms are often referred to as shaft seals or pump seals. Metcar manufactures the primary rings or carbon graphite wear faces used in many of today’s most sophisticated and reliable mechanical seals for industrial, aerospace, and military applications. These mechanical seal assemblies usually consist of a carbon graphite primary seal ring, a counter face ring, secondary (O-ring) seal rings, springs, fasteners, and a metal housing. Mechanical seal assemblies are also used to seal gases in high-speed compressors. These dry gas seals are double mechanical seals that utilize a controlled barrier gas and spiral grooves in the counter face which provide aerodynamic liftoff or gas lubrication between the seal faces. Mechanical seal primary rings can be supplied to customer drawings and specifications. The rings can be supplied plain, shrink-fitted, or cemented in metal retaining rings. Metcar mechanical seal rings can also be supplied with the sealing face lapped flat to one helium-light band.
